shabby valentine

1birddishs

I'm off to the thrift today in search of more materials for a project. You never know what will turn up. Like this dish. Sometime ago, I found a stack of these, dinged-up tea saucers with gold rims seriously worn and rubbed away. There were even a few tiny rim chips in the scuffed and scratched glass. Still, they were so delicate and once upon a time, very fine.

Decoupage- the ultimate disguise and costume! This took about 10 minutes after I had the plan. From the back, I used Mod Podge to place the first layer, the edged bird round. Painted the carefully trimmed image itself with the MP and applied it to the center of the back of the saucer face up. Press the bubbles out. Then behind that and face up, a slightly larger round piece (the pink toile tissue) and then strips of old sheet music applied like spokes on a wheel from the center out. The old music has a pulp content that makes it ideal for decoupage. It loves the glue and soaks it up, making the seal very clean. When all was dry, I trimmed the outside edge with scissors and later applied a backing of more tissue, then tidied the edge again. More MP for sealer on the finished back. The little dish now prettier than before, its lost elegance fully restored.

When I ran across this image, it seemed like a Valentiney project too. A heart, photo...or copy of a love letter!...in the center and it's an instant keepsake. The gold rim is a bonus, any old glass plate will do. Some sugared shortbread heart cookies on top, wrapped with pink tissue. Something to love now and later. O so sweet.  xoC

That is lovely, how nice to breathe new life into an old treasure

Now that is pretty. Is Mod Podge the best type of adhesive to use for a project like this?

Charlotte, your creativity is never ending! Such a beautiful plate. Forgive my ignorance but what is mod podge. I'm guessing it's a kind of glue. I'm going to be looking out for glass plates now.

This is lovely. I have done decoupage but not on glass. it was interesting what you had to say. Thank you Clarice

Love it. Going to try it. Leaving for thrift store now, to search for sweet saucers. Thanks for the inspiration!

This is very sweet! I love to use sheet music, but then I get side tracked because I run to the piano to play what I'm cutting up for crafts! Hope you find some good *treasures* at the thrift store! And, I hope we get to see the lot!

Mod Podge (Plaid Enterprises) is an adhesive product like white glue. You can use any decoupage medium that dries clear.

Another lovely idea for valentine or anytime. Have to get me some mod podge! Nel

ohh! I love it!!

wow, this is so...lovely, Charlotte! Oh, I love thrifting for a project in mind, how fun. Oh, and you sure know how to breathe life and beauty into old things. There is nothing like things that have a bit of history in them! xo Lia

Charlotte that is so pretty and it seems easy enough. I did have that notebook problem a few weeks ago, maybe I can get my confidence back if I give this a go. LOL

Love~love~love~decoupaged glass plates for a wow factor...I once did up a service for eight (crazy) but all set up they can't be beat! Lovely.

Another darling project of yours...love to see everything! I think I have a bottle of mod podge at home, I might try something...you are inspiring!

Pretty plate! Great idea with the gold rim.
Donna
