The peonies barely arrived when we were hit with a hot spell that wore them out. Then we had heavy rain and they just gave up. So glad I cut a few at the very beginning for Jane's birthday and a few for the house. More rain today and tomorrow. The secondary buds face the same fate so I cut them all.
We do have an enormous rambling fence rose in the back. I think that's about it for the garden season over here, but I do love my neighbor's pretty summer garden so close to our house. And the birds, always the birds. A new wren moved into the neighborhood, singing from dawn to dusk, often right outside the window. I wish you could hear him and I wonder if he knows how much he inspires everything in here.
Thank you so much for the amazing response to our invitation to come to Vermont. The spots have all been filled for the October getaway and we have an open waiting list. If it's something you might like to consider another time, maybe next winter, spring or summer, do write to Meleen and me at fallvermontgetaway[at]gmail.com. We'll keep you informed about what else is coming as far as future dates.
Wishing everyone a happy weekend. I must admit though, I'm thinking of all the anxious brides (and their mothers) around here today, their disappointment in the wet weather. Having had a few weddings with rain, all I can say is that there will still be enormous joy and probably a few really good stories about how the weather made it even more memorable.
